*CERTIFIED EMDR TRAUMA THERAPIST
EMDR Intensives are prolonged EMDR sessions aimed at increasing the efficiency of memory processing. EMDR intensives can help you feel less distress around traumatic events or adverse life experiences rather quickly while simultaneously helping you learn skills to manage nervous system dysregulation. For some, the idea of EMDR intensives may sound intimidating, and that's understandable!
If you need help right now, and you don't want to spend months in the traditional weekly model of therapy treatment to feel better, the intensive treatment might be right for you. An intensive approach enables faster symptom reduction and is more efficient.
EMDR intensives usually are scheduled over 1 day for 3 hours per day with a break or 2 days for 4 hours per day. Don’t worry--you won’t be trauma processing the entire time! You might take a break from processing to do some nervous system regulation strategies such as yoga or breathing exercises or you might just take a break to get tea and take a walk.
This session serves multiple purposes, including determining if an EMDR intensive is a good fit for you and setting intentions and specific goals for the EMDR intensive. This creates an opportunity for a customized experience during your intensive that is targeted towards your specific intentions and goals. An example may be, “An example may be, “I want to have better relationships with people.” After establishing that intention, we would specifically look at traumatic memories and negative core beliefs that are blocking you from attaining that specific goal and process those memories during your intensive.
In traditional talk therapy, you may spend time exploring your thoughts and feelings about current and even past situations, but in an EMDR intensive, you can rapidly make connections between your present symptoms, past experiences, and core beliefs developed throughout life. This process can be very eye-opening for clients. You may leave feeling as if they unlocked aspects of themselves for the first time and understand themselves and their responses from an entirely different perspective.
EMDR intensives can eliminate weeks or even months of living with trauma symptoms. The hard part of weekly therapy is devoting every single minute of every session to actually doing EMDR. Things come up in daily life, and sessions are often spent problem-solving, safety planning, or trying to understand emotions about situations, which are essential but do not necessarily relieve trauma symptoms.
